Hooghly Institute of Techonology, Hooghly

About the college:

Hooghly Institute of Technology (H.I.T) is a premiere Government Polytechnic of Hooghly District as well as of the state of West Bengal, India. It is affiliated by All India Council for Technical Education (A.I.C.T.E) and implements courses of West Bengal State Council of Technical Education, Kolkata.

H.I.T has full time day courses for regular students and part time evening courses for working personnel. Diploma level education in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical Engineering are imparted for regular students in day and the same in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering are imparted for part time students in evening. It also acts as a Nodal Centre of Hooghly District for monitoring Vocational Education System of the State.

In 1934, a technical institute called Moberly Institute of Technology was established at Hooghly by the British Government with a view to produce skilled technicians. At that time, it was situated near Bally More of Hooghly and was behind the B. T. College hostel. Afterwards, that institute was shifted to its present campus in 1952 with a new name of Hooghly Institute of Technology. The foundation stone of newly named institution was laid at new campus on February 28, 1951 by the then Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal, Dr. Kailash Nath Katju and the inauguration was made on June 8, 1952 by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy.

H.I.T has a very good library, laboratories and workshops. But the main strength of it is that it has a very good bouquet of faculty and staff, the spirit and dedication of whom makes it different from others at West Bengal. As for example, a training and placement cell, led by a teacher, keep doing continuous exercise to ascertain vocational training and industrial absorption of the students. A vocational cell led by another teacher keeps working all day and night to make the Vocational Education fruitful for the society. Such separate wings, led by different teachers and staffs, are also there to look after cultural and sports activities of the students.
