Comment: IIT-Bombay’s, MBA is the most famous but IIT-Roorkee’s DOMS is also decent. The best part of DOMS is that inward batch is quite small as there were just 132 in our batch. This made things easier to connect with faculties and fellow batch mates. DOMS building is located in IIT Roorkee’s campus and interacting with engineers of the college made life even more enjoyable. My experience at DOMS was not just great but greatest in many aspects. Like many, even I checked all the parameters that one should before joining a B-School. Best view as it is situated on the foothills of Sivalik. Placements prior to our batch was 8.45 lakhs average and in our batch that went a shade higher with 9.1. Fees was reasonable as the semester fees was 2 lakhs and other expenditure during the semester was around 1 lakh. So, in 12 lakhs one can finish their MBA from DOMS.
Academics stretched beyond the classrooms and the best thing was that at DOMS still the semester system exists as the trimester system is beyond me. Writing exams thrice a year in MBA is just not possible. Every now and then we were taken to Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore for competitions. DOMS participates in all the national level competition for management students and representing college was the biggest pride that I take from my time at DOMS. MBA in Finance is more of industrial program as we had many banking subjects and systems in place. At the departmental building of DOMS, a virtual bank was made and most of our practicals happened over there.
Professors were quite wealthy in academic and industry experience. Out of 132 only 74 students chose Finance as their specialization, it made all our professors know us by our name. That’s a huge achievement because that made us connect more with our professors. Their friendly nature made them approachable whenever we wanted.
If I take the recruiters name of our batch, they were Kelton Tech, TCS, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, KPMG, and Vedanta and a few more. Average package was 9.2 lakhs but at DOMS, you are not pinched with jobs at the national level as many students received placements for outdoors and the highest package taken away from our batch was 40 LPA. He was hired by Cognizant and since he is in my touch, he is doing wonders there. So, placements were great and probably as good as IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi’s, MBA departments.
DOMS were allotted two hostels and since the girls were less one of the hostels of 3 floors had girls staying in the first two floors and third floor was shared by boys. I stayed at the all-boys hostel which was average in facilities. Wi-Fi speed was ok and every building of IIT Roorkee hostel have a cyber café so even if the Wi-Fi wasn’t working, we had the advantage of using that café at Rs 20 an hour. Food quality was best during the breakfast but it kept deteriorating till the dinner was arrived at the table. The in time is 9 pm and Roorkee is not that big a city where one can find all good restaurants at one place. Had no choice but to manage with whatever food was provided.
IIT Roorkee is one of the most beautiful campuses that you will see. Bigger than many and facilities better than any. DOMS have their departmental building which was sufficient as it was at the centre of the campus and everything was close by as the main gate was 400m and canteen and all within 300-400m range. Library was the closest to our building and that made a world of good for us. If I explain all the facilities of the campus then my review will become an article so will share the facilities that you will not find elsewhere. You must have seen gyms, lawn tennis court, basketball court, and squash rooms in many of the colleges. At IIT Roorkee, there were billiards tables, rafting in the campus, and trekking also available inside the campus. A large swimming pool and a sports stadium where multiple sports were played. I think I should move on to next parameter as I have already started visualizing what all we did on free days at the campus.
Studies were utmost seriously done and clearing that many subjects in a semester meant, we have to perform out of our skin to maintain GPAs. However, the facilities of the campus made sure that we find time to enjoy the campus life most and we did that as no Sundays were spent in hostel rooms writing the assignments. We would go on a trek or cities like Haridwar and Rishikesh were nearby. Cultural events were not even close to what IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi has but who cared when I had the time of my life at DOMS.
