Researchers led by Prof. V K Tewari at the Dept. of Agricultural and Food Engineering at IIT Kharagpur have developed a differential GPS-enabled soil mapping \technology (an application and tractor based device) to improve the efficiency in the application of fertilizers (Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potash) in agricultural lands with data computed from the soil map in real-time. The soil map can be replicated for agricultural plots based on soil tests and fed into the DGPS module for use by farmers reducing their fertilizer and labour cost and improving job efficiency. This technology would be able to reduce 30% of fertilizers used in manual methods thus ensuring substantial savings in resource applications.
