“Alumni of IIT Kharagpur have always been instrumental in supporting the academic and research activities of IIT Kharagpur. These awards of excellence and Chairs are the best recognition an educational institution can confer to acknowledge excellence in teaching and research which also serves as a motivation for other faculty in the Institute. These faculty members also become the brand ambassadors of the Institute’s academic excellence” said Prof. P P Chakrabarti, Director, IIT Kharagpur.
Ranbir (Ron) Singh Gupta, President of the IIT Kharagpur Foundation USA and patron of one of the Chair Professorship Awards spoke about the conscious effort being made by the Foundation in USA to encourage senior alumni in the academia and industry to teach on a part-time basis at IIT Kharagpur. “Firstly, many IIT Kgp alumni in academia are interested in coming back. We work with our alumni in academia to identify possible candidates and connect the folks at IIT Kgp to them. There are many ways in which this works. We are trying to match the US salaries while they teach at IIT Kharagpur. The can come and spend a semester or even a year at IIT Kharagpur” said Ron.
The Foundation is also facilitating faculty from IIT Kharagpur to collaborate for unique and South Asia-centric courses for American students. “This is already happening with many universities where we have collaboration. In cases, like UC Berkeley, GWU Law School, Columbia, MIT, you will see their students on our campus and our students in those universities doing joint research with Professors from both Institutions as co-investigators” said alumnus Arjun Malhotra, Co-Founder of HCL Technologies.
