The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT), WB organized a special function to celebrate World Environment Day on the 4th of June, 2019 at its Haringhata Campus in Simhat, Nadia. As the campus was closed the next day due to Id-Ul-Zoha, the celebrations were one day in advance. The objective was to highlight the importance of technology in protecting the environment.

The Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of the University Prof. Dr. Saikat Maitra initiated the programme by planting a tree in the garden adjacent to the Bio-Technology Building. Other officials of the University also took part in it.
After that Prof. Maitra inaugurated the main programme in the midst of a lamp lighting ceremony at the auditorium of the University.

In this occasion Prof. Maitra and others highlighted the recent research activities of the University centering around environmental protection. The most important research activity in this field is is on re-use of water and plastic. The Univeresity's success in this area was highlighted in the programme.
MAKAUT had arranged for a photography competition among the students to make them aware of the different aspects of environment pollution. The results of the competition were announced on this occasion.
At the same time prizes were distributed to nine gardeners of the University for their enormous contribution towards decorating the new Haringhata campus by enhancing its greenery.

The University has also gifted two special dustbins to the Haringhata Municipality. A dustbin is also allotted to collect used plastic bottles from the University campus.
In a nutshell, MAKAUT wants to take a leading role towards environment protection and stresses on the use of modern technology towards creating a pollution free neighborhood.
