Sourav Ganguly conferred with D.Litt by BESU

Sourav Ganguly at BESU

The Bengal Engineering and Science University ( Besu) on Tuesday conferred an honorary DLitt on Sourav Ganguly, "an Indian who built a world class cricket team" and "took Indian cricket to a new level with his leadership and aggression". The shamiana roared as the former India captain walked up in a cape draped over his silver grey striped suit.

"When I started my journey I never thought I will ever reach this stage to get such a coveted honour. It is an absolute honour for me. I thank Besu for considering me capable enough of getting this honour," he said after governor M. K. Narayanan gave him the DLitt ( honoris causa) certificate." Cricket is nothing but a combination of art, science and technology. His captaincy is a lesson to learn for the students in management science, "said Ajoy Kumar Ray, vicechancellor of the 158 year old institution.

This is not Sourav's first DLitt, though. He got an honorary fellowship from the University of Central Lancashire in 2009 and an honorary DLitt from Assam University, Silchar, in 2011. " Derek ( O'Brien, the guest of honour) was asking me if this is my first. It is not… but definitely the best," said Bengal's favourite sporting son. So, will it be Dr Ganguly then? Sourav has preferred to follow the convention of not using the prefix since that privilege is considered a preserve of people who have submitted a dissertation and earned it.
